La raccolta, pubblicata postuma, comprende dieci poesie (otto in italiano e due in inglese), tutte scritte tra l'11 marzo e il 10 aprile del 1950 a Torino e tutte inedite, ritrovate fortuitamente tra le sue carte dopo la sua morte, in duplice copia, nell'ordine in cui sono state pubblicate.
Si tratta di liriche d'amore permeate di una struggente nostalgia, scritte con uno stile insolito per Pavese e dedicate all'attrice statunitense Constance Dowling, l'ultimo suo amore non corrisposto, conosciuta alla fine del 1949 dalla quale era stato superficialmente considerato e che lo aveva lasciato in un completo sconforto «È buio il mattino che passa senza la luce dei tuoi occhi.» Cesare Pavese (Santo Stefano Belbo, 9 settembre 1908 – Torino, 27 agosto 1950) è stato uno scrittore, poeta, traduttore e critico letterario italiano. È considerato uno dei maggiori intellettuali italiani del XX secolo.
