Alfonso V Re d'Aragona, detto il Magnanimo, diede origine nel 1442 nel Regno di Napoli alla nuova dinastia aragonese, che sarebbe rimasta su quel trono sino alla fine del Quattrocento. Per un lungo periodo, con lo stesso fondatore e con il suo secondo esponente Ferdinando I, comunemente chiamato Ferrante - per i suoi natali illegittimi subentrato al padre solo in quel Regno e divenuto quindi un sovrano nazionale - gli Aragonesi ricoprirono una posizione preminente nell'ambito dei Potentati italiani. Con la scomparsa di Ferrante nel 1494 si entrò in una fase di declino, caratterizzata sul fronte interno dall'avvicendamento di tre sovrani in un biennio, e a livello internazionale dall'intenzione di Francia e Spagna di conquistare il Mezzogiorno d'Italia. Dopo il breve regno del fratello maggiore Alfonso II e del nipote Ferrandino, fu Federico, secondogenito di Ferrante, impotente a resistere all'attacco francese e spagnolo, a concludere nel 1501, con l'esilio in Francia, la dinastia.
