L'umanesimo è stato un periodo della nostra storia che ha consegnato all'umanità alcune delle opere migliori mai realizzate. Non fa eccezione la letteratura e le arti filosofiche all'interno delle quali spicca la figura di Leon Battista Alberti, studioso poliedrico che ha caratterizzato la sua epoca. Leon Battista Alberti è considerato il modello dell'umanista, colui che ha incarnato l'Uomo Nuovo nato dall'Umanesimo, integrale e universale, che sa trarre dalla vita e dal mondo tutto ciò che questi gli possono offrire; un uomo fatto di anima e corpo, rivolto insieme al cielo e alla terra, libero seppure con i vincoli dati dalla fortuna. È' questo l'uomo della città terrena, cui la religione non comanda più rinunce o ascesi, ma di "ben vivere, umanamente vivere questa vita che è pur dono di Dio, in questo mondo che è pur tempio di Dio".
La riflessione pedagogica dell'Alberti segna un profondo rinnovamento dei metodi e delle concezioni educative. Alberti vuole sgretolare procedure codificate per introdurre caratteri di forte originalità usa il "volgare", in grado di esprimere qualunque contenuto e di rivolgersi ad un pubblico ampio. Usa la forma dialogica riconoscendo saggio non il filosofo, ma il pensatore non professionale e non professorale che ha imparato dagli artigiani e dalla natura a conoscere l'uomo e il mondo.
Seguire le inclinazioni del fanciullo, correggere con dolcezza, sono alcuni principi che riportano al fine dell'educazione: la conquista della virtù. Una riflessione profonda e acuta sulla didattica umanistica presente nel volume correda l'opera dando modo di apprezzare ulteriomente la grandezza dell'opera di Leon Battista Alberti.
