Nati nel giugno del 1921 per impulso di un pugno di soldati dei reparti d'assalto, gli Arditi demoliscono il mito dell'invincibilità fascista, impartendo sonore sconfitte agli squadristi in camicia nera e mettendo in crisi l'intera macchina propagandistica del Regime, abituata a giustificare le violenze antipopolari in nome dei valori sacri alla Patria. Fatti oggetto fin da subito delle particolari attenzione del governo e delle forze dell'ordine e osteggiati anche dei leader dei partiti operai, gli Arditi del Popolo conducono un'impari lotta contro le milizie fasciste, ottenendo importanti vittorie e costituendo, persino dei giorni della Marcia su Roma, una trincea che i seguaci di Mussolini non riuscirono a superare neppure con l'aiuto dell'esercito e della polizia.
