C.), invano si cercherà Caieta (e Caietanus, presente in tutta la latinità classica, solo in Giulio Paride, epitome I 4, 6 in villa Caietana – quella in cui Cicerone fu ucciso dai sicari di Marco Antonio -, e, come nome proprio di persona, in Marziale VIII 37, 1 e 4). Ugualmente infruttuosa riuscirà la ricerca di una qualsiasi allusione a Caieta a una lettura integrale della Tebaide e dell’Achilleide (circa 11.000 versi): la materia stessa – la guerra fratricida per il regno di Tebe dei due figli maschi di Edipo, e l’epopea del Pelide, troncata peraltro, come in un simbolico naufragio, nel bel mezz...
