"Nel regno della mafia" è uno dei primi saggi mai scritti sulla mafia,all’indomani del delitto Notarbartolo.Emanuele Notarbartolo ex direttore del Banco di Sicilia, fu la prima vittima eccellente della mafia, uccisa il primo febbraio del 1893, sul treno Termini-Palermo. I sospetti caddero immediatamente su un deputato della Destra storica, Raffaele Palizzolo, come mandante dell’omicidio, legato alla mafia palermitana. Il caso accese un importante dibattito sulla situazione della mafia in Sicilia e in Italia e, soprattutto, sulla collusione tra mafia e politica. Nel 1899 la camera dei deputati autorizzò il processo contro Raffaele Palizzolo come mandante dell’assassinio. Nel 1901 venne giudicato colpevole e condannato, ma nel 1905 fu assolto per insufficienza di prove, probabilmente sempre grazie ai suoi appoggi politici. “Ma il siciliano che io sono, e l’uomo ragionevole che presumo di essere, si ribellano a
questa ingiustizia verso la Sicilia, a questa offesa alla ragione. (…) Ditemi voi se è possibile concepire l’esistenza di una associazione criminale così vasta ed organizzata, così segreta, così potente da dominare non solo mezza Sicilia, ma addirittura gli Stati Uniti d’America…”
