I protagonisti sono Renzo Tramaglino e Lucia Mondella, due giovani operai tessili che vivono in una località del lecchese, nei pressi del lago di Como, allo sbocco del fiume Adda.Ogni cosa è pronta per il matrimonio di Renzo e Lucia quando un signore del luogo, Don Rodrigo, scommette con il cugino Attilio che riuscirà a concupire Lucia. Perciò il curato del paese, don Abbondio, incaricato di celebrare il matrimonio, viene minacciato durante la sua solita passeggiata serale da due bravi di don Rodrigo, affinché non sposi i giovani. In preda al panico, don Abbondio cede subito. Il giorno dopo imbastisce delle scuse a Renzo per prendere tempo e rinviare il matrimonio, non esitando ad approfittare della sua ignoranza per utilizzare come spiegazione frasi in latino. L'autore Alessandro Manzoni (Milano, 7 marzo 1785 – Milano, 22 maggio 1873) è stato uno scrittore, poeta e drammaturgo italiano. È considerato uno dei maggiori romanzieri italiani di tutti i tempi per il suo celebre romanzo I promessi sposi, caposaldo della letteratura italiana.Fu senatore del Regno d'Italia.
