Florian Höhne möchte den Lesern 'Werkzeuge' an die Hand geben, diese Frage zu beantworten: Für zwei ausgewählte Kontexte – die USA und Deutschland – wird die Entdeckung und Geschichte des Begriffs 'Öffentliche Theologie' historisch rekonstruiert und eine systematische Klärung seiner Bedeutung vorgenommen. Dabei ergeben sich drei Grundfragen: die sozialethische Grundfrage nach der öffentlichen Geltung partikularer religiöser Orientierungen, die fundamentaltheologische nach der öffentlichen Kommunizierbarkeit besagter Geltungsansprüche und die ekklesiologische nach der Rolle der Kirche in der Öffentlichkeit christlicher Orientierung. Anhand dieser Fragen entsteht ein Überblick über die Positionen in der öffentlich-theologischen Debatte der vergangenen Jahrzehnte.
