In ihm bringen die europäischen evangelischen Kirchen zum ersten Mal seit der Reformation gemeinsam zum Ausdruck, was über das Verständnis des Wortes Gottes, die Schrift als Zeugnis des Redens Gottes, die Auslegung der Bibel und ihr Verhältnis zur Tradition und zu den Bekenntnissen heute gesagt werden kann. Das Dokument will zudem klären, wie evangelische Kirchen auf der Grundlage des gemeinsamen Verständnisses des Evangeliums zu gemeinsam verantworteten Stellungnahmen kommen. Damit setzt es einen Impuls zur Positionsbestimmung des Protestantismus im ökumenischen Dialog und zur Verbindlichkeit des gemeinsamen Zeugnisses und Dienstes der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa.
