Hören und Sehen

Die Rhetorik der Anschaulichkeit in den Gottesthron-Szenen der Johannesoffenbarung

About this book

[The Rhetoric of Vividness in the Scenes Describing God's Throne in the Revelation of John] Nils Neumann's Habilitation thesis "Hören und Sehen" deals with figurative language in the Revelation of John, analyzing it by the means of Rhetorical Criticism. Among Hellenistic rhetoricians the topos of vividness is well known: When a speaker puts his subject into words vividly and mentioning many details he transports his audience right into the scene which he narrates. In this perspective new insights arise on the effect that the last book of the Bible intends to exercise on its audience. Neumann shows on the basis of the scenes that are situated in front of God's throne how the text offers its hearers an experience of immediacy. The audience of the Book of Revelation can view the narrated events with their inner eyes and are thus addressed not only cognitively but also emotionally.
