Die unterschiedlichsten Personengruppen und Institutionen berufen sich auf Martin Luther und die Reformation. Der vorliegende Sammelband fragt anhand von acht Studien zu verschiedenen Reformations- und Lutherfeiern des 18.–20. Jahrhunderts, wie diese Verortung in der reformatorischen Tradition für die Ausbildung spezifischer kollektiver Identitäten im jeweiligen zeitgenössischen Kontext genutzt wurde. Der geographische Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei auf dem Ausgangspunkt der Reformation: Die Leucorea Wittenberg und ihre Nachfolgerin, die Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg kommen ebenso in den Blick wie Mitteldeutschland bzw. die DDR. Eine Ausweitung gilt dem ersten Reformationsjubiläum in den USA, das 1817 unter maßgeblicher Beteiligung von in Halle ausgebildeten Pastoren zelebriert wurde.
