Politischer Widerstand auch gegen die von Gott beauftragte Obrigkeit kann legitim sein, wenn diese Obrigkeit ihren Auftrag grob verletzt. Diese Ansicht begann sich seit etwa 1530 unter den Wittenberger Theologen zu verbreiten, wurde aber erst in der hier edierten Schrift in aller Deutlichkeit vor einer breiten Öffentlichkeit artikuliert. Das hier vorgetragene Verständnis der klassischen Stelle aus dem Römerbrief, Kapitel 13, und die damit verbundene Konzeption gegenseitiger Verantwortung der unterschiedlichen Stände innerhalb des Gemeinwesens wurde im Magdeburger Bekenntnis von 1550 rezipiert und wirkte im reformierten Bereich weiter, geriet allerdings im Luthertum später weithin in Vergessenheit. Es ist an der Zeit, diesen Strang theologisch-politischer Reflexion wiederzuentdecken.
