Jakobus gehört zu den häufig übersehenen und oft missverstandenen großen Gestalten aus der Anfangszeit des Christentums. Als Bruder von Jesus stand er ihm während seines irdischen Wirkens ablehnend gegenüber. Als unerwarteter Auferstehungszeuge gehörte er jedoch seit Beginn zur Gemeinde in Jerusalem. Deren Leitung hatte er für rund 20 Jahre inne, ehe er im Jahr 62 als Gesetzesübertreter in Jerusalem gesteinigt wurde. Dennoch gilt er als Verfechter eines am jüdischen Gesetz orientierten Judenchristentums und als Hauptgegner des Paulus und der gesetzesfreien Heidenmission. Der mit ihm verbundene Jakobusbrief fristet seit Luthers berühmter Vorrede als 'stroherne Epistel' zu Unrecht ein Randdasein.Das Hauptanliegen des Jakobus war es, den Glauben an Jesus als Messias Israels und die Zugehörigkeit zu Israel als Gottes erwähltem Volk miteinander zu verbinden. Die Kirche seit dem 4. Jahrhundert entschied sich jedoch gegen diesen Weg: Man konnte nur entweder Jude oder Christ sein, und dies wirkt bis heute nach. Die weit verbreitete Unsicherheit im Umgang mit jüdischen Christen motiviert dazu, noch einmal neu auf den Herrenbruder Jakobus zu schauen.
