Das neue Medium der Flugschrift ermöglichte auch Frauen, in der Öffentlichkeit zu wirken und damit die Verbreitung reformatorischer Ideen voranzubringen. Zwischen 1523 und 1534 gingen im deutschen Sprachraum 18 Flugschriften reformatorisch denkender Frauen in den Druck, eine weitere erschien 1557. Drei der Autorinnen bleiben anonym; die übrigen sind Argula von Grumbach, Herzogin Ursula von Münsterberg, Florentina von Oberweimar, Margareta von Treskow, Ursula Weyda sowie Katharina Zell.Ein immer wiederkehrendes Thema in diesen Flugschriften ist die Auseinandersetzung mit geistlichen Personen und Autoritäten, die die Frauen dazu führt, auch ihr eigenes Selbstverständnis zu reflektieren und sich – ganz im reformatorischen Sinn wie die Männer – als mit dem Geist Gottes Begabte zu verstehen.
