Als Mittelpunkt dieser Auseinandersetzung erweist Zachhuber den Versuch, historische und systematische Theologie in einem vom deutschen Idealismus inspirierten Theorierahmen zu verbinden. Durch diesen Zugang gelingt es, einige der bis heute einflussreichen Theorien in der exegetischen, historischen und systematischen Theologie von ihrem Ursprung her und in ihren Prämissen verständlich zu machen. [Between Idealism and Historicism] Throughout the last two centuries it has been controversial whether theology can be understood as a science. Zachhuber's book offers an account of the discussion of this question by F.C. Baur (1792-1860), Albrecht Ritschl (1822-1889) and their students. Zachhuber demonstrates that their central concern was the construction of a unified discipline connecting historical and systematic theology on the basis of philosophical ideas ultimately inspired by German Idealism. In this way he can elucidate some of the most influential theories in biblical, historical, and systematic theology from their origins and principles.
