Die Deutungsgeschichte von Reformation und Bauernkrieg, von Martin Luther und Thomas Müntzer beginnt im 16. Jahrhundert. Seither wurde immer wieder und mit unterschiedlichen Urteilen an diese Ereignisse und Personen erinnert. Während der Zeit der deutschen Teilung geriet die Beschäftigung mit der Reformationsepoche zu einer weltanschaulichen Auseinandersetzung. Betrachtet man die Rezeption in der DDR und der Bundesrepublik gemeinsam, zeigen sich neben den Versuchen der Abgrenzung und Distanzierung auch Momente der Verflechtung und Bezugnahme. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele und entlang der Jubiläen von 1967 (450 Jahre Reformation), 1975 (450 Jahre Bauernkrieg), 1983 (500. Geburtstag Martin Luthers) und 1989 (500. Geburtstag Thomas Müntzers) untersucht die Studie, wie Gedächtnisorte erhalten, gepflegt oder neu erschaffen wurden und welche Bedeutung Kirche und Staat in Ost und West reformationsgeschichtlichen Ausstellungen für das christliche Bekenntnis, die politische Sinnstiftung und den Tourismus beimaßen. Since then the events and persons of that era have been commemorated and assessed in quite different ways. During the period of the Division of Germany the Reformation Period became the subject of ideological controversies. The study gives an overview of the reception in the GDR and in the Federal Republic of Germany, the attempts to distance oneself from another but also of the moments of interconnection and reciprocity.
