Die Pastoralbriefe treten in der gegenwärtigen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion wieder verstärkt in den Blick. Ihre literarische und theologische Beurteilung ist jedoch nach wie vor kontrovers. Ausgehend von der Problematik der persönlichen Notizen sind ganz unterschiedliche Versuche unternommen worden, die pseudepigraphische Gestalt und Intention der Pastoralbriefe zu erklären. Die Arbeit untersucht deren literarische und epistolographische Charakteristik vor dem Hintergrund sowohl antiker literarischer Brieftheorien als auch der dokumentarischen Papyri, um so zu einer Neubewertung dieser Briefe zu gelangen. Da es vor allem um die Beurteilung der persönlichen Notizen und ihrer epistolographischen Funktion geht, liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf dem Vergleich mit dokumentarischen Papyri, die in der bisherigen Pastoralbriefforschung nicht oder nur wenig beachtet wurden.
