Es fehlt jedoch eine Theorie, die diesem Thema anthropologisch, theologisch, pädagogisch und gesellschaftstheoretisch auf den Grund geht und in der Lage ist, Ordnung in den vielschichtigen und aktualistisch aufgeregten Bildungsdiskurs zu bringen.Auf der Grundlage reformatorischer Einsichten zur Bestimmung des Menschen in seiner schöpfungsmäßigen Freiheit, Handlungsfähigkeit und Verantwortung entwickelt der bekannte Praktische Theologe Reiner Preul einen kategorialen und existenzialen – also nicht elitären – Bildungsbegriff. Diesen Bildungsbegriff, der auch für andere weltanschauliche Positionen rezeptionsoffen ist, gleicht Preul mit den zentralen Motiven des klassischen europäischen Bildungsdenkens (selbstbestimmte, ethische, ästhetische, humanistische und an der Natur orientierte Bildung) ab. Die Frage nach der Erlangung von Bildung als personaler Reife wird durch Überlegungen zu den bildenden Institutionen (speziell Familie, Schule, Medien und Kirche) und zu den Grundlinien der Bildungs- und Kulturpolitik beantwortet. Als exemplarische Konkretionen werden abschließend Konturen gebildeten Christseins in der Gegenwart skizziert.An dieser Bildungstheorie sollte künftig kein einschlägig arbeitender Theologe, Pädagoge, Soziologe oder Philosoph vorbeigehen.
