1918 hatte Deutschland den Ersten Weltkrieg verloren. 1919 sollte der Vertrag von Versailles den Frieden regeln. Ein Punkt des Friedensplans war eine Volksabstimmung darüber, in welchem Staat die Menschen leben wollten – in Deutschland oder in Dänemark. Diese Frage war jahrhundert lang heiß umkämpft, zwischen Herrschenden genau so wie zwischen Beherrschten. 1920 entschieden dann knapp 200 000 wahlberechtigte Einwohner des Herzogtumsn Schleswig in einer Volksabstimmung darüber, wo künftig die deutsch-dänische Grenze verlaufen sollte, und diese Grenze ist bis heute friedlich und stabil. Doch warum wurde die neu gezogene Grenze zu einer vorbildlichen "Grenze für den Frieden"?
