Esta no es una lectura de la Divina comedia para especialistas académicos o eruditos. Me considero experto en Dante solo en el sentido estrictamente literal del término: "experto", es decir, una persona que ha tenido experiencia de lo que dice. Les he leído Dante a decenas y decenas de clases, a miles de chicos; y, así, mi pasión a la hora de leerle ha ido creciendo continuamente, ya que la obra de Dante es una obra viva, que como todas las grandes obras de arte dialoga con el lector de forma tan profunda que, de alguna manera, este la reescribe. Por lo tanto, le debo en buena parte al trabajo en el aula que la comprensión que tengo hoy de este texto sea mucho más profunda, más rica y articulada que la que tenía hace treinta o cuarenta años: hay ciertos versos, ciertos tercetos que para mí tienen el nombre o la cara del alumno que levantó la mano y dijo: "Profesor, pero entonces Dante aquí quiere decir esto, aquí hay tal señal, nos podemos quedar con esto…". Durante todos estos años, hemos entrado en el texto y el texto siempre nos ha dicho algo nuevo.
