About This Book

Inspired by true events that occurred in a south-western NSW town, Skate is about a group of kids battling their local council to get a skate park built in their home town of Narragindi. In the midst of this struggle they are forced to deal with the sudden death of one of their friends. They attempt one final stand; the skate park holds the promise of renewing local youth pride and self-esteem.%##CHAR13##%%##CHAR13##%Skate is a turbo-charged, moving and funny account of the mates, mothers, tricks and traumas of a group of young skaters. Enhanced by live skateboarding, the play is full of the emotional awkwardness of adolescence, its adrenaline, compassion and humour, and reflects the hopes and aspirations of young people in regional Australia.

SCENE ONE
A pack of kids, some on skateboards, some on BMXs, swarms across the stage. They form an unruly chorus—sweeping us in and out of scenes, offering commentary. They are also part of the drama as individual characters.
This pack of kids can include, at various times, AMY, STELLA, MITCHELL, JT, TRAVIS and RILEY.
JYSSYNTAH and MARISSA hang around the skaters but never skate.
The pack takes over the skateable facade of the Town Hall including the steps and they’ve maybe constructed some makeshift skating ramps out of whatever junk they can find. They skate, ride bikes, sit on the edge dangling legs.
JT:
The whole thing started last year—
TRAVIS:
Way before then, retard.
RILEY:
Yeah, what about the time before—?
JT:
Okay, okay, but—
MITCHELL:
Actually, you’d really have to go right back to the late 80s when—
JT:
Whatever! We gotta pick one spot to start the story.
RILEY:
Yeah, fair enough.
JT:
Thank you. Now you made me forget what I was saying, deadheads.
STELLA:
We skate around the Town Hall steps because we can’t—
JT:
Because there’s now...
