About This Book

'Unacceptable, foul, disastrous, inappropriate, or awkward: Not a Good Look!'An absurdist portrait of modern Australian life, NaGL uses the conventions of clowning, vaudeville, Brecht and Dadaism and delivers a buoyant, uncharmed appraisal of a nation. Old Uncle Chuck rings the bell and in 22 boxing rounds, a family battles it out. With clatter and clutter, they are always divided and united. It's our family. It's our nation. It's not a good look... but look we must!

FIRST STANZA

The stage is in darkness.
Gong!
Lights up.
ROUND ONE
UNCLE CHUK holds up a call card on which is written: ‘Round 1: Little pimple on Earth’s dirty bum’.
UNCLE CHUK: Round number one: Little pimple on Earth’s dirty bum. Round number one: Little pimple on Earth’s dirty bum. Round number one: Little pimple on Earth’s dirty bum.
Lights down.
A door (stage right) slowly opens. A stream of light cuts across the stage revealing a space full of furniture that could be anything, but most likely is a dining/living room.
The sound of heavy steps approaching the open door grows in volume. A large backlit male figure appears in the doorway and stops, casting a shadow across the space. It is MANOLO.
Pause.
MANOLO: Up your arse!
He giggles and tiptoes away, scared. There is no reaction to his action. Nothing happens. He creeps back, assuming his position in the doorway.
Pause.
Up your…
A door on the opposite side swings open with a bang. MANOLO giggles, turns and runs for his life, slamming the door closed behind himself.
A small female figure steps into the doorway (stage left). She casts a small shadow across the space. She is GRACE. She holds a spatula in her raised hand.
GRACE: Shut up1 You scared little piece of shit!
MANOLO’s giggle can be heard offstage.
Shut the fuck up!
MANOLO explodes with more laughter.
I swear to God, I’ll give it to you!
Silence.
GRACE waits, uncertain. She raises the spatula and shakes it with anger.
You’re asking for it! You little swollen pimple on Earth’s dirty bum!
The door (stage right) opens slowly again. MANOLO assumes his position. They stand like that for a while.
MANOLO: That was a good one.
GRACE raises the spatula higher.
GRACE: Shush! You little fart.
MANOLO chuckles.
MANOLO: ‘… pimple on Earth’s bum!’
GRACE: Pimple, what?
MANOLO: Pimple was good.
GRACE jumps and stomps her feet three times. MANOLO squats. Nothing happens.
Pause.
GRACE: Shush! You little pimple!
MANOLO bends over towards GRACE and whispers as if prompting:
MANOLO: ‘… on the Earth’s dirty bum’!
GRACE: I know!
MANOLO: So say it.
GRACE: Say what?
MANOLO: What I have said… just then.
GRACE: And what did you say?
MANOLO: I said what you had said before… about—
GRACE cuts in.
GRACE: So, I said it, right?
MANOLO: What?
GRACE: I say, I said it.
MANOLO: Said, what?
GRACE: What you want me to say now?!
MANOLO: [thinking] Yes. You said it. [He thinks.] But—
GRACE: [cutting in] Aaaaaaaaaa!
She...
