PROLOGUE
The Company assemble on stage.
DOLLY: Will you look at us by the river! The whole restless mob of us on spread blankets in the dreamy briny sunshine skylarking and chiacking about for one day, one clear, clean, sweet day in a good world in the midst of our living.
SCENE 1
Margaret River. A lantern is lit. The LAMB FAMILY huddle around it.
ORIEL: I think that’s done it.
LESTER and ORIEL LAMB have brought their family—QUICK, HATTIE, ELAINE, RED, FISH and LON—for a sunset prawning expedition. QUICK unravels a prawn net. LESTER strips to his underwear to go into the water.
Red, Elaine, you get some wood. Hattie, you stay and look after Lon.
RED drags ELAINE off. HATTIE takes LON for a cuddle.
LESTER: I’ll take the boys.
ORIEL: They’re not tall enough.
LESTER: The girls grizzle too much. Drives me mad.
ORIEL: Put on your shoes or you’ll be stung. Can’t stand your grizzling.
LESTER: What are you talking about?
ORIEL: Last time a cobbler stung you we had to load you onto the flatbed—
HAT: And I had to drive!—
ORIEL: And we delivered you to that doctor, naked and screaming like a breech birth.
The KIDS laugh. LESTER puts on his shoes.
LESTER: All right, no stings tonight. Give us a kiss then. Quick, you wanna go, right?
QUICK: Yeah.
LESTER: Where’s your brother?
QUICK: Dunno.
ORIEL: Fish? Fish?!
LESTER: Where are you, boy? Fish?
ORIEL: Fish?
QUICK: Fish?
Everyone calls up and down the riverbank. FISH appears out of darkness, swinging on a rope.
FISH: Boo!
EVERYONE: [overlapping] Fish! / Don’t do that! / Oh, Lord!
FISH leaps off the rope, lands and feigns breaking his leg. He hobbles towards ORIEL, who panics.
ORIEL: Oh, Lord …
FISH hoots with laughter and straightens up.
Samson Lamb!
All laugh at FISH’s trick and ORIEL’s fury.
LESTER: Come on boys, let’s get some tucker.
LON: Prawns! Prawns!
ORIEL darns on the beach; HAT cuddles LON; RED and ELAINE collect firewood. QUICK, FISH and LESTER walk into the water. LESTER holds a lantern. They spread the net.
Don’t grin so much, Fish, you’ll frighten the prawns away. Come on, Quick, don’t be so slow.
FISH: You’re one to talk, Dad.
They have fanned out across the water. The GIRLS build a fire. HAT sings softly to LON.
Oi, Quick, look at Dad. He looks like a statue in a fountain with that light. Wants to be careful someone don’t toss a penny in and make a wish.
QUICK: What would they wish for, you reckon?
LESTER: Yeah, what?
FISH: Prolly wish they could get their money back.
LESTER: Cheeky blighter. Okay, start runnin’ ’em towards me, boys.
