Presidente del Senado con Napoleón, acabó siendo su opositor y tuvo que exiliarse.Esta pequeña obra es una pieza literaria de gran valor, también por su importancia moral y política, todavía actual, y por constituir un magnífico estudio sociológico de las clases pudientes del Antiguo Régimen. Sieyès protesta contra una sociedad en la que las leyes no son las mismas para todos. Su obra es un reproche contra el feudalismo y una apuesta por la meritocracia, manteniendo la equidad como principio de su discurso.
