Die Wohlfahrtsökonomie steht damit im Spannungsfeld der in jüngerer Zeit wieder verstärkt diskutierten Beziehung von Ethik und Ökonomie. Ohne etwa eine Synthese beider Disziplinen zu fordern, wird in dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt, inwieweit eine stärkere Einbeziehung ethischer Überlegungen die ökonomische Analyse bereichern kann. Anhand einer Untersuchung des von Bergson in den 30er Jahren eingeführten und von Samuelson und Arrow aufgegriffenen Konzepts einer gesellschaftlichen Wohlfahrtsfunktion werden nicht nur die Grundlagen bisheriger wohlfahrtsökonomischer Standardkonzeptionen dargelegt, sondern diese auch mit der jüngsten Diskussion verknüpft.
