Der demografische Wandel diente in der ersten Dekade des 21. Jahrhunderts als Hauptgrund für die in Deutschland erfolgten Reformen im Bereich der Sozialversicherung, besonders der Alterssicherung. Die damit verbundenen institutionellen Veränderungen werden in einem Überblick über die Genese und die aktuelle Organisation der deutschen Alterssicherung umfassend und zugleich kompakt dargestellt. Anschließend geht es um die Frage, ob die erfolgten Reformen dem aktuellen Stand der Forschung gerecht werden. Dabei wird besonders auf die Rolle von Unsicherheit eingegangen, die in früheren Modellen nicht und damit im Prozess der politischen Beratung kaum berücksichtigt wurde. Schließlich bietet die Arbeit mit einer umfassenden empirischen Bestandsaufnahme erstmals einen Überblick zum Altersvorsorgestatus im Drei-Schichten-Modell. Dieser wurde mit einem innovativen Ansatz der Datenkombination ermittelt.
