Chapter 5:
Concerning Jesus Christ
The doctrine concerning Jesus Christ is called Christology. The question of who Jesus is has been a problem since the first century. To all outward appearances, He is just like us, the same as any other human being. However, Jesus claimed that He is the Son of God, the Resurrection, and the Life. He also claimed that He and the Father are one. Jesus supported His claims by performing many miracles that are impossible for any man. He turned water into wine. He calmed the stormy sea, healed crippled men to walk, healed the people with paralysis, opened the ears of the deaf, opened eyes of the blinds, cleansed the lepers, walked on water, cast out demons, fed five thousand with only five loaves of bread and two fishes and twelve baskets were left over, and He even raised the dead people to life.
Furthermore, as He promised, He rose from the dead in three days and appeared to His disciples in various ways for forty days. He commissioned His disciples to make disciples of all nations by proclaiming the Gospel. Then He promised them that He would return and ascend to heaven while they were watching.
The disciples who trembled before His Crucifixion met with the risen Jesus, and after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, began proclaiming the Resurrection of Jesus. Among those who heard the Gospel from the apostles, some believed in their hearts, and others did not. To those who met the risen Jesus didnât have to argue about who He was. However, those who had not met the risen Jesus, some began arguing over who Jesus is.
Our God is not some unknown ambiguous mighty god in heaven. Our God is Yehowah, who became flesh because of us. We believe Immanuel God, who became flesh to be with us because the children share in flesh and blood. He likewise also partook of the same (Hebrews 2:14).
Who could confess that Jesus is Lord and God? Among those encountered risen Jesus, who would not admit that Jesus is Lord and God? Among those encountered risen Jesus, who would live for the world and not live for Jesus? Among those who met risen Jesus, who would not be a witness of His Resurrection?
Who Jesus is could only be known to those who encounter the risen Jesus. Without encountering the risen Jesus, we can talk about the person whom we only heard about but never known him. There is only one reason to argue who Jesus is. Because they have not encountered risen Jesus. Until they meet the risen Jesus, they canât help but misunderstand Him because they do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God. Among those who have encountered the risen Jesus, no one was confused about who He is.
Things to Be Known Only after the Resurrection
Imagine if you are one of the people who were standing before the cross of Jesus. Could anyone be able to recognize Jesus? And said, âBehold, God who became flesh.â No one!
âWhich none of the rulers of this world knew; for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. But as it is written: âThings which eye saw not, and ear heard not, and which entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for those loving himââ (1 Cor. 2:8â9).
What are the things that God prepared for those loving him? What are the things that humans have never seen, never heard, and never thought of? Could people think of the incarnation of God? Have people ever thought of the Root of David becoming the Son of David? We have never seen or heard it, nor have we even thought about it. Have people ever seen, heard, or imagined that God would become a person to die on the cross for sins of the people? Have you ever heard, seen, or thought about seeing a dead person rise again? It is unthinkable that God would become a man to die for sinners and resurrect for us. So the rulers of this generation did not know, and if they had known, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.
Those who knew Jesus the best were His family and His disciples. However, His brothers went on to say that He was crazy (Mark 3:21). How many miracles had His disciples seen? They even witnessed the miracles of raising the dead. Nevertheless, even the disciples did not know who Jesus was.
When they heard that Jesus rose from the dead, His disciples did not believe the news. âAnd they, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, believed not. After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but neither did they believe themâ (Mark 16:11â13). âFor as yet they understood not the Scripture, that He must rise again from the deadâ (John 20:9).
They did not believe when others reported the Resurrection of Jesus, and they went to the tomb and identified the empty tomb, and still could not believe it. So when did they find out who Jesus is and believe? They had come to believe in Jesus only when they met the risen Jesus.
âAnd when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples, therefore, rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Then He said to Thomas, âReach here thy finger, and see My hands; and reach thy hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing.â And Thomas answered and said to Him, âMy Lord and my God!ââ (John 20:20, 27â29).
The only way we can recognize the identity of Jesus is through the event of His Resurrection. However, people have a hard time believing Jesusâs Resurrection, because they have never seen, heard, or even thought of such a thing. The Resurrection is what God prepared for those loving Him.
The only way to know that Jesus is the incarnate God is through the power of the Resurrection. So beforehand, He prophesied that after the Lord has swallowed up death in victory, people will recognize Him as their God (Isaiah 25:8â9).
âAnd these things His disciples understood not at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and they did these things to Himâ (John 12:16).
âWhen therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this to them, and they believed the Scripture and the Word which Jesus had spokenâ (John 2:22).
The only way to recognize Jesus as incarnate God is through His Resurrection; therefore, only after His Resurrection, people may know who He is. Hence, those who can understand and believe Him are those who met risen Jesus in their hearts. People who saw risen Jesus in the heart are the ones who heard the Gospel and believed in the heart. Moreover, it is Godâs will to give them salvation.
The Meaning of Jesus Christ
When summarizing the sixty-six books of the Bible into one paragraph, it is the Gospel. Also, if we summarize the Gospel in two words, it is Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must know what it means when we call âJesus Christ.â
What does Jesus Christ mean? Jesus is a name, and Christ is a title. In the dictionary, the name Jesus means âYehowah is salvation.â And Christ means âthe anointed one.â Therefore, the dictionary meaning of Jesus Christ means that Jesus (Yehowah is salvation) is the anointed one. The dictionary meaning is called denotation.
On the other hand, implied meaning throughout the book is called connotation. The implication of Christ implied throughout the Bible is that Yehowah God has become flesh to save us. It means the Incarnation of God, the God who became flesh, and the Root of David, who became the Son of David. Therefore, Jesus Christ means that Jesus is God who became flesh.
