Grace for the Task
In this final chapter, I would like to encourage every reader. No matter where life brings us, we can lead well. Oftentimes, we only believe in ourselves when the tools and resources are available to us. What do you do when there are no resources available? What steps do you take when the assignment is bigger than your personal ability? As a young preacher serving in the church, I made many mistakes. One of the mistakes I made was focusing my attention on my ability and not his leadership grace. Leadership grace is not just about the endowment of his super on your natural. It’s about understanding who you are as a leader and individual. Many people have great ability but poor character.
As quoted before in Proverbs 18:16, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” If the leader is gifted without character, relationships and opportunities will flee quickly from that leader. This is why we must understand that every God-given assignment has grace attached to it.
I can remember so vividly as we were endeavoring to purchase the first parcel of property for the church. We were not a large church with resources, but we had faith in God and an inner drive that could not be denied. I remember riding by the land, asking the Lord, “When are you going to raise up this church?” I was frustrated with our current conditions, but I believed there was something more in store.
As I rode pass the property, I never paid any attention to it. This time, I looked and saw a sign in the land that said “For sale.” Immediately, I got excited! Without money to build a new church or to pay for the property, expectation rose inside. I called my wife, and the next day, I took her by the property as well as our church administrator and my mother.
I felt the Lord had finally heard my cry for help. We visited with the owner of the property, who agreed to sell us the land at a discounted price. Grace was working in our midst. We closed on the property, and now the property is ours. I was so thankful. As a leader, we were believing to pay the property off in three years to start building our new church. Sometimes, things don’t work as you have planned. Once again, in the midst of moving forward, people began to leave the church for various reasons. My confidence was at all-time low. Leaders, not every time someone leaves your church, business, department, or fellowship is because of your leadership deficiency. Some people just desire something different. It’s okay to be upset, but don’t stay there. We must start rebuilding again. So instead of it taking us three years, it took seven years with a financial miracle. I asked every member to participate in our Super Sunday Giving Day. We had team captains who were challenged to raise as much money as possible.
The week prior to our Super Sunday, one of the missionaries of our church called me. She said, “Pastor, I got something to tell you. One of my cousins has given the church a ten-thousand-dollar cashier’s check to the church to help with the property payoff.” I paused and said, “Really?” I went to praising the Lord. She said, “I’ll bring you the check.” On that Super Sunday, we were able to pay the property off in full.
The Lord will provide for his work. I learned a lesson that day from the Lord: “Leadership grace is not only the ability to lead without disgrace, but his grace given for the task at hand.” As we conclude this chapter, I shared this testimony to encourage a leader who’s trying to build with limited resources and personnel. We are still striving to build that new church, but one thing I’ve learned, there is grace for the task. Leadership grace is available to accomplish his will, not our own. Lead well no matter where you serve!
