Following the events of the previous book, the French officer Chauvelin is even more committed to the capture of the elusive Scarlet Pimpernel. He hires a young actress, Désirée Candielle, to help manipulate both Marguerite and Sir Percy. When the parties collide, Chauvelin and Sir Percy are forced into a duel that has potentially fatal consequences for everyone involved.
