Le 994 lettere, inedite o apparse precedentemente in edizioni parziali, testimoniano i passaggi salienti della biografia intellettuale di Spaventa, gettando nuova luce sul pensiero filosofico dell'autore, sull'impegno politico e parlamentare, sulle frequentazioni pubbliche e private (a cominciare dai rapporti con il fratello Silvio) e sulle vicende della scuola. L'opera è il risultato di un lavoro archivistico e di ricerca bibliografica promosso dal "Comitato nazionale per il bicentenario della nascita di Bertrando Spaventa (1817-2017)", istituito nel 2016 presso il Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività culturali e del Turismo per iniziativa della Fondazione Gramsci e del Dipartimento di Filosofia della Sapienza-Università di Roma.
