Il Seicento fu, nella Chiesa italiana, un secolo enfatico e splendente, di fede militante, sovraccarica e sfarzosa. A celebrare e difendere le verità della fede concorsero suore e sante mistiche, dagli slanci ascetici e dai doni sovrannaturali. A denunziare la minaccia di diavoli, eretici e infedeli si moltiplicarono fenomeni impressionanti di possessione, che agitavano donne dal corpo invaso, curate dagli esorcisti con formule a metà tra sacramentali e magiche. Ed era peraltro assai sottile l'arte di distinguere l'invasione del corpo ad opera di angeli o diavoli, la vera dalla falsa o "affettata" santità.Il libro illustra i sistemi usati per raggiungere l'ascesi, ottenere visioni ed entrare in contatto coll'aldilà, mettendo a confronto i metodi proposti dai gesuiti, fondati sull'immaginazione figurativa, con quelli opposti, "quietisti" – a fine secolo condannati dal Sant'Uffizio – che privilegiavano la contemplazione facendo silenzio nell'anima.Tra la fine Seicento e l'inizio del secolo successivo, lo stesso Sant'Uffizio pose un freno alle forme troppo vistose di santità e possessione, i cui sintomi si vollero più miti e disciplinati. Alla metà del Settecento, infine, la medicina cominciò a proporre nuove diagnosi dei segni prima interpretati come invasioni di spiriti ultraterreni, spostando l'accento sui disturbi cerebro-nervosi, eredi delle passioni subite dalla sensuale e corporea anima operante nelle estasi barocche.
