Per questo il poema è anche e innanzitutto una gigantesca macchina elaboratrice di giudizi sui comportamenti e le emozioni degli esseri umani. Implica quindi una riflessione complessiva e appassionata sulla giustizia: un'esigenza destinata a perpetuo inappagamento e dunque eternamente riproponibile. La giustizia divina e quella umana sono rappresentate attraverso la soggettività dirompente di Dante in quanto Autore e in quanto Personaggio: due aspetti solo talvolta sovrapponibili che producono continue occasioni di drammatizzazione, di dubbio e di conflitto, nelle quali il lettore – di fatto il terzo protagonista della Commedia – è costantemente chiamato a confrontarsi e interagire, ancora oggi.
