Di questo mondo multiforme e poliedrico, i saggi qui raccolti hanno scelto di privilegiare l'osservazione delle realtà urbane, attraverso la quale è possibile cogliere le specificità e differenze, le discontinuità e fratture, ma anche le dinamiche di interazione reciproca, i processi di integrazione ed esclusione, e, soprattutto, comprendere le elaborazioni e rappresentazioni collettive dell'"altro".Sempre sulla scorta braudeliana, protagoniste di questo tentativo di lettura dei contesti urbani mediterranei sono le due discipline tradizionalmente impegnate a decifrare le strutture territoriali: la geografia e la storia, che mai come in questo caso rivelano le loro profonde interconnessioni e interdipendenze. All'interno di questa prospettiva si è tuttavia cercato di presentare una pluralità di approcci e punti di vista per dare conto della complessità dello scenario analizzato, ma anche nell'intento di offrire spunti di riflessione e confronto e di proporre nuove categorie interpretative.
