A partire dalla critica umanistica ā€“ e di Erasmo in particolare ā€“ al culto dei santi ereditato dal Medioevo, un'ampia e multiforme documentazione (scritti dei riformatori, formulazioni confessionali, ordinamenti ecclesiastici, scritture e riscritture agiografiche) attesta con tutta evidenza il passaggio dalla concezione dei santi come intercessori e patroni a una memoria dei santi coerente con i principi teologici della Riforma: finalizzata alla confessione della fede, al ringraziamento e alla lode a Dio, all'emulazione e all'incoraggiamento delle comunitĆ  nel momento della prova.
