Questo volume illumina il ruolo straordinario delle tradizioni liturgiche e agiografiche nella civiltà dell'Oriente e dell'Occidente in un periodo di tempo che va dall'epoca tardo antica alla caduta di Costantinopoli per l'Oriente e all'avvento della Riforma protestante per l'Occidente.Lo sviluppo del culto dei santi è profondamente legato alla celebrazione liturgica, ma la storiografia ha, in genere, prestato scarsa attenzione a questo tipo di cultura e alle sue fonti, privilegiando la letteratura agiografica; allo stesso tempo ha spesso trascurato di comparare le tradizioni religiose orientali e occidentali malgrado le comuni origini e i profondi interscambi.Agiografi, liturgisti, filologi, storici, studiosi dell'arte medievale e bizantina sono convenuti a Firenze dal 26 al 28 ottobre 2000 – in occasione del IV Convegno internazionale di Studio dell'Associazione italiana per lo studio della santità, dei culti e dell'agiografia – per confrontarsi sulle molteplici implicazioni del culto dei santi fra Oriente e Occidente nel lungo millennio di una storia in parte condivisa, in parte separata.
