I saggi riuniti in questo volume indagano il rapporto tra santità e scrittura storica nella produzione di Cesare Baronio (Sora 1538-Roma 1607), prete oratoriano e successivamente cardinale, proponendosi di rispondere a due interrogativi collocati sul crinale che unisce e separa, all'inizio dell'età moderna, la storia e la teologia.Il primo riguarda i parametri utilizzati per stabilire la verità storica nel periodo oggetto della sua attenzione, dalla Chiesa antica a quella medievale. Baronio fu incaricato dalla Curia romana di replicare con gli Annales Ecclesiastici alle protestanti Centurie di Magdeburgo e, all'interno della riforma liturgica postridentina, di assumere un ruolo decisivo nella redazione del Martyrologium Romanum. Oggetto degli studi sono anche i modi con i quali l'accertamento storico-filologico del documento e le problematiche della storiografia umanistica si siano o no saldate con la necessità di riaffermare, dopo la Riforma protestante, il primato di Roma.Il secondo riguarda la sua attività diplomatica e gli effetti concreti sulla sua scrittura storica: dal confronto con la Corona di Spagna fino ai rapporti con Venezia, dall'azione a favore della Corona francese all'attenzione verso l'Europa orientale. Nel complesso, dai saggi emerge il superamento della polemica storiografica odierna sulla Controriforma, tra denigrazione ed esaltazione del Baronio, per ricollocare il suo lavoro nel cantiere della ricerca storica tra i secoli XV e XVIII.
