Il ghetto di Roma nacque nel 1555, secondo quanto stabilito da papa Paolo IV con la bolla Cum nimis absurdum. Si trattò di una rivoluzione che sconvolse la società ebraica al termine di un periodo difficile, iniziato nel 1493 con l'arrivo degli ebrei espulsi dalla Spagna e culminato nel 1553 con il rogo del Talmud in piazza Campo de' Fiori. Attraverso l'esame delle fonti cristiane ed ebraiche a disposizione, la ricerca si dipana tracciando un quadro della società ebraica, delle sue istituzioni e della sua classe dirigente nel periodo precedente l'inaugurazione del ghetto e nei decenni successivi.A guidare la riflessione una serie di interrogativi sulle strategie di sopravvivenza grazie alle quali, nonostante tutto, il gruppo riuscì a resistere a più di tre secoli di reclusione e aggressivo proselitismo.
