Al momento del loro insediamento nel Regnum Sardiniae, nel 1720, i Savoia dovettero fronteggiare il fenomeno di una piccola nobiltà turbolenta, impegnata in un'aspra competizione per il prestigio e il potere all'interno delle comunità rurali, abile nel trovare referenti in funzionari regi, rappresentanti feudali e gerarchie ecclesiastiche.In quei villaggi l'onore era un bene primario e il confronto avveniva alla luce del sole, tra fazioni 'disciplinate', legittimate all'interno della collettività, rispettose delle leggi non scritte della 'giustizia comunitaria'. La vendetta si configurava, di volta in volta, come risposta ragionata e commisurata all'offesa. Per non espandere il conflitto agli estranei, lo scontro armato si formalizzava spesso in luoghi ad esso 'deputati'. Negoziate, registrate in atti notarili e officiate in riti pubblici, le riconciliazioni interrompevano le violenze e aprivano periodi di pace nei quali le cariche comunitarie venivano accuratamente distribuite al fine di un'equilibrata condivisione del potere locale.Per alcuni decenni poco poterono la repressione militare e la 'giustizia del re' contro quelle faide che, agli occhi dei vicerè sabaudi, erano fonte continua di disordini e crimini.
