Queste si contendono a suon di spada e di denari le anime dei valligiani, con rapimenti, tradimenti, omicidi e un'attività di propaganda dai tratti moderni. Sul rinnovamento religioso incide l'emigrazione degli uomini che portano con sé le loro famiglie o al contrario devono abbandonarle, comprano campi, vendono libri, si radicano nelle borgate montanare della nuova patria. Dagli archivi emerge il mondo contadino, quei "rustici" che parlano una lingua "goffa", si nutrono solo di castagne, grano saraceno e pane di miglio, ma sanno essere consapevoli dell'autonomia delle comunità montanare.
