In questa monografia, la prima finora dedicata a un confronto fra la memoria del fascismo in Italia e la memoria del nazismo in Germania (Est e Ovest), l'autore ci conduce in un viaggio attraverso un universo affascinante e poco esplorato come quello della stampa satirica del dopoguerra, individuando nella diffusione della demarcazione fra puro e impuro lo snodo rivelatore di una situazione di ansia legata ai due regimi, con diversi esiti nelle due nazioni.Un'ansia in primo luogo derivante dalle procedure di epurazione del dopoguerra, davanti alle quali la società tedesca e quella italiana si sentirono messe sul banco degli imputati. Ma anche da un disagio più profondo. In questo senso, il ribrezzo provocato dalla diffusione delle immagini dei crimini nazisti favorì una significativa presa di distanza dei tedeschi dall'esperienza della dittatura. Al contrario, in Italia una rappresentazione del fascismo edulcorata ha fatto spazio, nell'opinione pubblica del dopoguerra, a una relazione più ambigua, e ancor oggi non risolta, con la memoria del trascorso regime.
