Il nuovo Stato italiano nasce come uno Stato liberale, fondato sulla libertà religiosa e la pluralità dei culti.I saggi qui raccolti analizzano molti aspetti, alcuni ancora inesplorati, di questo processo: dalla vivace partecipazione degli ebrei e delle minoranze al processo risorgimentale al ricco apporto di studiosi ebrei e protestanti alla costruzione della cultura della nuova Italia, alla netta opposizione all'emancipazione degli ebrei e degli altri culti da parte della Chiesa, schierata in un'ostilità senza aperture ai principi liberali fondanti del nuovo Stato italiano.Emergono così, da una parte, gli aspetti del pensiero cattolico antigiudaico e i suoi rapporti con l'antisemitismo moderno, dall'altra, i rapporti intensi tra il pensiero mazziniano e in genere quello risorgimentale e l'ebraismo, la costruzione di una storia letteraria italiana ad opera di studiosi ebrei come D'Ancona e Ascoli, le letture riformate di Dante e la ricezione di Heine nell'Italia del Risorgimento, l'influsso del modello risorgimentale sul progetto nazionale sionista. Completano il quadro alcuni saggi che analizzano i percorsi interni del mondo ebraico, dalle trasformazioni della «religione degli ebrei» al conflitto gravido di conseguenze tra assimilazione e separazione.
