L'idea è quella di incrociare lo studio "orizzontale" (diacronico) della storia letteraria con quello "verticale" (sincronico) dello sviluppo dei generi.Le cinque "età" in cui è generalmente suddiviso il medioevo latino (barbarica, carolingia, feudale, scolastica e scientifica) fungono così da sfondo costante per una struttura tripartita: storia civile e culturale, storia della lingua latina e storia dei generi letterari.
