Affermare la propria autorità, proponendo di sé l'innovativa immagine del monarca; "scorporare" terre, castelli e villaggi dipendenti dai contadi delle città; subordinare a sé i potenti dello Stato, trasformandoli da vassalli in sudditi.Furono questi alcuni tratti caratteristici della politica di Filippo Maria Visconti, duca di Milano (1412-1447), un sovrano per certi versi "rivoluzionario" che innovò profondamente il rapporto feudale, assorbendo forme di dipendenza personale, come quelle vassallatiche, nell'impersonale subordinazione del feudatario-suddito all'autorità territoriale e "pubblica" del duca.Questo modo nuovo di rappresentare il ruolo del principe – che peraltro, nella prassi di governo, non cessò mai di negoziare il consenso dei diversi corpi politico-territoriali che componevano il dominio, viene qui inquadrato nel più ampio mosaico della costruzione dello Stato regionale nell'Italia settentrionale tra Medioevo e Rinascimento, secondo un approccio basato su una penetrante e scrupolosa lettura dei documenti in cui sedimentò l'elaborazione intellettuale dei giuristi e cancellieri al servizio del Visconti.
