Il volume tratta dell'ultima, più lunga e più complessa fase del nepotismo papale. Nella seconda metà del XVI secolo il nepotismo si trasforma e si istituzionalizza. Ai consanguinei dei papi è ormai interdetta, tra l'altro, la possibilità di divenire principi territoriali, ma viene dato loro modo di assistere direttamente il pontefice nella gestione degli affari della Sede apostolica. Il cardinal nipote diviene il perno dell'attività curiale e il più significativo dei titoli che gli vengono stabilmente attribuiti è quello di Sovrintendente dello Stato ecclesiastico.Per quanto "utile" o, per lo meno, funzionale, la presenza in Curia del nipote e degli altri parenti si rivela onerosissima per le casse pubbliche, oltre che fonte di scandalo, ma il tentativo di abolire il fenomeno si trascina per più di un secolo. Solo verso la fine del Seicento si comincia ad intravedere nella figura del Segretario di Stato il possibile sostituto del cardinal nipote e si creano le condizioni per l'emanazione, da parte di Innocenzo XII, della bolla di soppressione del nepotismo. Ma altro tempo dovrà scorrere prima che gli aspetti più evidenti della pratica scompaiano effettivamente.
