Si è appena concluso l'ottavo centenario dell'incontro tra Francesco d'Assisi e il nipote di Saladino, il sultano Al-Malik al-Kamil, avvenuto nel settembre del 1219, in un tentativo di dialogo che ha provato ad oltrepassare barriere e confini. Dopo quell'incontro la presenza dei Minori in Terra Santa si declinò in molteplici dimensioni. I frati, adempiendo alla loro Regola, furono protagonisti di un'intensa stagione di azione e di pensiero che ebbe al centro la questione del confronto e della conversione possibile degli infideles nell'Oltremare crociato, proseguita, dopo il 1291, quando essi pensarono l'impensato: essere di nuovo a Gerusalemme ormai in mano musulmana.Tra Europa e Mediterraneo i frati si dimostrarono abili diplomatici, predicatori di crociata, reclutatori capaci di definire i profili del vero militante per Cristo, persino estensori di progetti di riconquista dell'Oltremare, uomini che pensarono e praticarono la testimonianza martiriale ricollocandone il senso dentro quella lunga esperienza storica che interrogava ciascuno di essi e tutto l'Ordine dei Minori.
