Il tribunale del vescovo di Asti Ăš il centro di un complesso sistema di relazioni economiche e politiche che innervano la societĂ  astigiana del tardo medioevo. I registri redatti fra XIII e XIV secolo dai chierici notai e in generale la documentazione vescovile testimoniano infatti una concentrazione eccezionale di competenze giuridiche e finanziarie presso il tribunale ecclesiastico: dalle questioni relative al credito e all'usura, alle liti matrimoniali, fino ai conflitti politici che dividono le famiglie eminenti. Si delinea bene la capacitĂ  della Chiesa astigiana di valutare e di riorganizzare i rapporti sociali e le gerarchie economiche della cittĂ  grazie a un uso sapiente dei meccanismi di inclusione e di esclusione, in particolare della scomunica. Con gli inizi del Trecento, tuttavia, il coinvolgimento crescente del clero nei conflitti di fazione riduce l'efficacia dell'azione della corte vescovile. Entrano allora in crisi sia la capacitĂ  della curia di dare ordine alle relazioni sociali sia il modello ideologico di unitĂ  civica sostenuto a lungo dalla Chiesa.
