La Storia della letteratura italiana di Francesco De Sanctis (in prima edizione nel 1870) è stata protagonista della scena culturale e politica dopo l'Unità: pur non avendo niente del manuale scolastico, piacque ai borghesi colti della nuova Italia. A loro consegnò un'idea della nostra letteratura che è diventata il duraturo paradigma dell'intera storia d'Italia e della stessa identità nazionale. Un'idea al tempo stesso semplice, chiara e forte: con l'eccezione di Dante, unico padre della patria, la nostra letteratura conferma la lunga "decadenza" e la "servitù" della storia d'Italia nell'età moderna. De Sanctis, sempre con la tensione e la passione narrativa che della Storia fa un capolavoro, giudica negativamente gli scrittori da Petrarca a Metastasio: li ritiene dediti al culto di una bella forma indifferente al contenuto, moralmente indegna nella sua vuota frivolezza, incapaci di quella «serietà di un contenuto vivente nella coscienza» che è, o dovrà essere, il fattore distintivo della «nuova letteratura» della nuova Italia.Questo libro, che nella sua prima edizione ha vinto il Premio De Sanctis 2018 per la saggistica, descrive l'impianto argomentativo della Storia con una minuziosa, e innovativa, analisi del suo lessico, documentando le forzature propriamente teoriche e ideologiche del mythos che inventa, ma anche le contraddizioni, dai risvolti talvolta drammatici, che lo innervano.
