Giulio Pallavicino (1558?-1635), cronista e storiografo, è fra i massimi esponenti della cultura ligure di età moderna. La sua produzione storiografica, rimasta pressoché inedita, riemerge ora da queste pagine, offrendo un contributo prezioso per la comprensione di una stagione intensa e drammatica attraversata dalla Repubblica di Genova tra il 1624 e il 1629.In quegli anni di guerra e di congiura, Genova giunse «in forse di perdere la sua libertà»: la disfatta militare (1624-25) non sopì le mire di Carlo Emanuele I, duca di Savoia, e l'impresa di Genova ? sul versante italiano della guerra dei Trent'anni ? si trasformò in un articolato disegno sedizioso (1627-29).Il filo rosso che attraversa l'intera riflessione pallaviciniana è appunto la lesa maestà, in specie di matrice popolare: quella forma di dissenso che periodicamente perturbò il primo secolo di vita della repubblica aristocratica (1528-1628). Pallavicino ne ragionò con acume nel Vero e distinto ragionamento, edito ora per la prima volta, dove avvicina e interseca le posizioni di quei pensatori che, come lui, si schierarono in difesa del ceto di governo e dei suoi fondamenti ideologici.
