In realtà l'istituzione affondava le sue radici e le sue premesse nel XVIII secolo, ed è proprio sull'analisi del periodo che va dalla metà del Sette­cento alla metà dell'Ottocento che si concentra questo volume. Sono infatti quelle condizioni storiche e quelle espe­rienze culturali ed estetiche che hanno reso possibile, dopo un ampio margine di tem­po, la creazione di un'accademia per le belle arti spagnola nella capitale pontificia.La data di apertura dell'Accademia di Spagna apparirebbe del tutto anacronistica se non la si considerasse come il risultato di un lento percorso di elaborazione, nel quale le vicende dei numerosi artisti iberici presenti a Roma si sono intrecciate a diversi tentativi di regolamentarne e organizzarne la presenza.
