Negli ultimi anni la storia delle relazioni fra le due sponde del Mediterraneo si è arricchita dello studio di una serie di fenomeni (la schiavitù, il riscatto, la conversione, i rinnegati, le relazioni diplomatiche) che ha fatto del confronto tra i tre monoteismi lo strumento per indagare le forme in cui si espressero i conflitti e le convergenze fra i sistemi politici, sociali e culturali sviluppatisi nei paesi che si affacciano sul Mare Nostrum e, per via del sistema imperiale spagnolo, anche sulle terre del Nuovo Mondo.Le ricerche contenute in questo volume si inseriscono in questo filone di studi, mettendo a fuoco avvenimenti, dinamiche e forme di espressione religiosa che si dislocano in un arco cronologico la cui ampiezza (dal XVI al XIX secolo) consente l'individuazione dei mutamenti intervenuti sia sul piano culturale e della sensibilità che su quello delle istituzioni preposte a gestire le relazioni interreligiose.Condotte da studiosi italiani, spagnoli e cileni, le indagini si distribuiscono in due parti. Nella prima, i temi del cautiverio, della schiavitù e delle redenzioni fra Cinque e Seicento sono analizzati con l'ausilio di fonti che, per la loro diversità, consentono una pluralità di letture di questi fenomeni. Nella seconda sono contenuti studi sulle relazioni fra le tre religioni mediterranee che intercorsero in terra d'Africa tra XVIII e XIX secolo, all'ombra dei nuovi scenari del colonialismo europeo e con l'apporto di nuove figure che sostituirono o affiancarono i precedenti protagonisti.
